    What is piperine?

Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Colorless monoclinic prismatic crystals, odorless, with a burning sensation after tasting. It is neutral to litmus reagent. Easily soluble in chloroform, ethanol, ether, soluble in benzene and acetic acid, almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether. It can be extracted from the dried near-ripe or mature fruits of pepper (Piper nigrum L.). It has a good antagonistic effect on experimental electroconvulsions in mice, and is effective against convulsions and audiogenic attacks caused by pentylenetetrazol, picrotoxin, strychnine, intraventricular injection of tubocurarine, glutamate, etc. There are varying degrees of antagonism. It is also effective in certain types of epilepsy. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrum.

    What are the benefits

Pepper is an essential ingredient in Indian medicine and is used to treat a variety of ailments. Pharmacological studies have proven many of their traditional medicinal effects, such as analgesic and antipyretic effects, antioxidant effects, antibacterial effects, etc. Piperine is the active ingredient of pepper. Piperine has a wide range of pharmacological effects, and has been found to have antioxidant, immunomodulatory and other effects.

    1. Antioxidant effect
Using the DPPH-free radical generation system, the ability of piperine to scavenge free radicals in anhydrous ethanol medium was studied. Its ability to scavenge free radicals can indicate the strength of its antioxidant capacity. Studies have proven that piperine has certain antioxidant activity, its antioxidant capacity is equivalent to 60.05% of vitamin C, and it exists stably in acidic media.

    2. Effect on the central nervous system
Studies have proven that piperine has sedative, hypnotic, anti-convulsant, skeletal muscle relaxation and anti-depressant effects. When studying the effect of piperine on animal sleep, it was found that piperine can significantly reduce the spontaneous activities of mice, and significantly Prolonging the sleep time of mice induced by pentobarbital sodium can also significantly increase the deep sleep of rabbits. The mechanism may be related to its increase in 5-hydroxytryptamine content in the brain.

    3. Immunomodulatory effect
Immunotoxicological studies on piperine showed that administration of piperine to mice for five consecutive days had no obvious toxic effects and the liver weight increased normally. When studying the effect of piperine on thymocytes, it was found that piperine can inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase the content of glutathione (GSH), and inhibit cell apoptosis and changes in the phenotype of thymus-dependent lymphocytes.

    4. Reduce the occurrence of inflammation
Piperine reduces inflammation and pain. Oral administration of piperine at a dose of 50 mg/kg can significantly reduce the occurrence of inflammation. Piperine has anti-inflammatory properties. Piperine and its relatives are absorbed through the skin and therefore act on subcutaneous tissue, nerves and blood vessels. In addition, pharmacological studies have shown that piperine can prevent atherosclerosis, lower blood lipids, have anticonvulsant and antiulcer activities, protect the liver, and will not cause damage to testicular function. And whether inside or outside the body, piperine can also slow down intestinal peristalsis. Piperine's effects on the nervous system and sexual organs reflect its anticonvulsant and vasodilatory properties.

    Application direction

Used as an additive for brandy to give it a spicy taste. Also used as insecticide. In addition, it is the main anticonvulsant ingredient in Chinese prescriptions for treating epilepsy (white pepper and radish). It is used as a spicy raw material in the food industry and has a bactericidal effect.
