What is piperine?
Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Colorless monoclinic prismatic crystals, odorless, with a burning sensation after tasting. It is neutral to litmus reagent. Easily soluble in chloroform, ethanol, ether, soluble in benzene and acetic acid, almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether. It can be extracted from the dried near-ripe or mature fruits of pepper (Piper nigrum L.). It has a good antagonistic effect on experimental electroconvulsions in mice, and is effective against convulsions and audiogenic attacks caused by pentylenetetrazol, picrotoxin, strychnine, intraventricular injection of tubocurarine, glutamate, etc. There are varying degrees of antagonism.
